Mix & Fix: Do Good With Food

I'm an idealist when it comes to making the world a better place and I'm glad I'm not alone. There are now so many more capable associations that have been created with such clear goals in mind about how they want to make the world better.

In September, World Leaders committed to 17 Global Goals to achieve extraordinary things in the next 15 years. They range from ending extreme poverty to fighting inequality & injustice; fixing climate change to ending world hunger. The Global Goals for sustainable development could get these things done. In all countries. For all people. It’s a really exciting time for global development.

Earlier this month, ImpactHub organized a Mix & Fix: where Christoffer Choong of UNDP shared about their role in the Global Goals, but also what the UNDP’s focus is here in Malaysia. A few organizations were present at the event representing all 17 goals: the Food Aid Foundation, SOLS 24/7, MyKasih, Simply Cookies, Water for Smiles, Build for Tomorrow, Think City, Biji Biji, Human Library Malaysia and MENGO/EcoKnights.

During the evening participants were invited to get more familiar with the SDGs, and make a personal pledge to help achieve these global goals. These ranged from buying fewer plastic products, to signing up as volunteers on some of the projects featured. All in the spirit of Global Goals. Local Action. My pledge is to eat more local food hence reducing my carbon footprint from importing of food.

We all have different interests so here are some options for you.

Simply Cookies

Simply Cookies is a social enterprise that trains single mothers how to bake, provides baking equipment for them, then sells the cookies for them.

They break the poverty cycle of single mothers by giving them economic opportunities with the flexibility to balance motherhood and financial independence by providing baking equipment, materials and training to bake delectable cookies from home.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: For Cafes and Restaurants, you can sell the cookies loose or sell the cookies in dainty gift jars. For corporate, at RM225/month, you'll get 4kg of assorted homemade chemical-free cookies in your pantry.

Human Library Malaysia

In its initial form the Human Library is a mobile library set up as a space for dialogue and interaction. Visitors to a Human Library are given the opportunity to speak informally with “people on loan”; this latter group being extremely varied in age, sex and cultural background.

The Human Library enables groups to break stereotypes by challenging the most common prejudices in a positive and humorous manner. It is a concrete, easily transferable and affordable way of promoting tolerance and understanding.

It is a “keep it simple”, “no-nonsense” contribution to social cohesion in multicultural societies.

EcoKnights’ mission is to inspire sustainable living among Malaysians through:

Providing platforms where activities on sustainability can be shared with the masses;
Youth development programmes;
Publication and documentation of environment-related materials;
Capacity building in areas of community engagement and environmental education; and
Smart partnerships with corporate and government agencies in developing effective engagement programmes on sustainability with the general public
